The reason there are herbs and medicine is to treat illnesses. Here is a list of multiple illnesses that can be used (so that the medic wolves have something to do) all taken from Erin Hunter's 'Warriors' series.
Cough - a sickness that is like a human cold. Symptoms are just coughs and sneezes, though it can be dangerous to pups or young canines.
Deaths: none Best Treatment: Tansy
Greencough - a sickness similar to pneumonia that is often rampant among the packs in leaf-bare because they become weak from cold and starvation. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, pus excreted from the eyes, sneezing, fever, dizziness, exhaustion, and green phlegm streaming from the nose. Because it can be contagious, the medic's den tends to become a quarantined area so that the epidemic does not spread.
Deaths: none Best Treatment: Catmint, feverfew, and lavender
Whitecough - a mild sickness like a cold. More common than greencough, but can become greencough or even the fatal blackcough if not treated by the medic. Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, white phlegm streaming from the nose, and a slightly high temperature. This is similar to puppycough, which is the least harmful of all coughs and is mostly caught by pups.
Deaths: none Best Treatment: Catmint
Blackcough - a fatal sickness that spells certain death for any canine who catches it. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, pus excreted from the eyes, sneezing, fever, trauma and hallucinations, exhaustion, blood streaming from the nose and blood being coughed and vomited up. The medics must be very careful in handling the patient, sometimes even covering up their noses to prevent them from catching the sickness. Nothing should be touched, drunk or eaten that the sick one has touched, in fear of catching it. The medic's den becomes a quarantined sanctuary. The canine dies within three days if not treated, but even then, the chances of survival are extremely slim.
Deaths: none Best Treatment: catmint (though chances of survival are still very slim)
Rabies - a horrible, incurable virus transmitted through the bite by another rabied animal. Symptoms include slight or partial paralysis, anxiety, restlessness, confusion, agitation, abnormal behavior, paranoia, hallucinations, foaming at the mouth, tears in the eyes, and inability to speak and swallow. There are three stages to rabies. The first stage is a one to three day period characterized by behavioral changes. The second stage is the excitative stage, which lasts three to four days. It is this stage that is known as furious rabies due to the tendency of the affected dog to be hyperactive and bite at anything near. The third stage is the paralytic stage. Incoordination is seen due to the rear limb paralysis and drooling and difficulty swallowing is caused by paralysis of facial and throat muscles. Death is usually caused by respiratory failure, suffocation, dehydration or starvation.
Deaths: none Best treatment: none/unknown
Chill - a very mild ailment usually caused by very cold weather or falling into icy water. Much like whitecough, but with cold chills instead of fever.
Deaths: none Best Treament: Catmint, feverfew, and lavender
Cracked pads - a painful ailment usually seen in elderly canines. The pawpads crack from cold or dryness, and if untreated can lead to infection. Symptoms include swelling of the paws and pain.
Deaths: none Best Treatment: Marigold, and poppy seed if there is pain
Aching joints - basically arthritis in canines. Caused by age or damp weather. Symptoms include pain and stiffness.
Deaths: none Best Treatment: daisy leaves and anything that cures pain
Bleeding - blood loss due to injury, such as a wound sustained in battle. Severity depends on injury.
Deaths: Ryuu, Maun, Visable Best Treatment: Cobwebs pressed onto the wound
Poisoning - the case of eating deathberries, poisoned fresh-kill, or other kinds of harmful things.
Deaths: none Best treatment: Yarrow and stinging nettle
Freezing - a case where a canine is too cold and might die. Usually seen in young pups and elders.
Deaths: none Best Treatment: Grooming fur the wrong way to get the blood flowing.
Starvation - a case where a canine is too hungry.
Deaths: none Best treatment: Fresh kill or mother's milk.
Weakness - a case where a canine is exhausted.
Deaths: none Best treatment: Rest and strengthening herbs such as chamomile
